One Year or Six Months?

Car insurance is offered in one year or 6 month terms.

Which is better?

There are pros and cons to each. And we can talk about them now.

Pros for 12 months

  • Locked in your price for 1 year, so you know what your insurance will be for one year

  • Any accidents or violations that happen during that year the insurance will not re-rate until after that 12 month term

Pros for 6 months

  • Every 6 months you are re-rated and accidents or violations may come off

  • You may have a lower rate than a 12 month policy (sometimes they are surcharged)

  • Opportunity for you to move to a new carrier with no financial consequence after 6 months

What may work for you may not work for others. So your driving and claims history matters here as well as how long you been with your current carrier. If you do not have much history then one may benefit you than the other as you grow in your insurance experience!
